PlainWalk (Android) Privacy Policy

PlainWalk ("the app") is designed with your privacy first. This page covers the Android version. The iOS version is here.

Information we collect

The app never sends your walking records to the developer. There is no developer server.

Location: used to draw the roads you walk onto your blank map. Location data is stored on your device and is never sent to the developer.
Steps (physical activity): the device's step sensor is used to show the steps of a walk. This data is processed only on the device.

Real-map view (Google Maps)

The screen that overlays your trail on the actual streets uses Google Maps (Google Maps Platform). While that screen is open, the area being shown and, if your location is shown, your current location are sent to Google in order to display the map. Google's handling follows the Google Privacy Policy. Nothing is sent to Google from the blank map screen.

Backup

Android's automatic backup may store your walking records (including location data) in your own Google Account on Google Drive. This is an Android feature: no developer server is involved and the developer cannot access its contents. You can turn it off under Settings > Google > Backup on your device.

Where your data lives

All records (trails, pioneered distance, steps) are stored on your Android device. No account is required.

Third parties

Your walking records and location are never provided to third parties. Google Maps is used only to display the real-map view (see above). No advertising or analytics SDK is used.

Deleting your data

You can delete all records at any time from Profile > Reset data in the app. Uninstalling the app deletes the data on the device. A backup in your Google Account is deleted after a period of time according to Android's rules.

Permissions

Location (precise, while using the app): required to record your trail. While recording, location continues to be collected after you turn off the screen (a notification shows that recording is in progress); when you stop recording, location collection stops too. "Allow all the time" is never requested.
Physical activity: used to show steps.
Notifications: used to show your distance while recording and to pause or end the recording.

Any of these permissions can be revoked at any time in Android Settings.
